The Walking Dead by Bart van der Steen

The Walking Dead | Fact & Fiction

Will the zombie apocalypse end the world, or offer us a second chance?

In 2010, a comic book series spawned a wildly successful tv-franchise: The Walking Dead. Just like the tv-series, the original comic book is not just a zombie slasher story. Rather, it tells the story of a group of survivors, trying to build a new society from the ashes of the old one. Or, as the cover text states: “The world of commerce and frivolous necessity has been replaced by a world of survival and responsibility.”

As the character of the comic try to survive zombies and create a new society together, all sorts of political, social and philosophical issues emerge. Who gets to join the group, how are conflicts dealt with, who makes the decisions – and how can these things be decided while zombies are trying to overrun each human hideout?
